January 2010

Henry Louis Mencken, the noted political journalist and critic, opined

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed — and hence clamorous to be led to safety — by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

This is precisely what left-leaning American politicians seek to implement every day of their existence.  They have honed it and nurtured it and cultivated it into truly impressive art form.  You should be very, very afraid, because

  • Man-made global warming is going to wipe out the polar bears, drown the coasts, make the earth a desert, cause many more hurricanes, cause massive snowstorms, extinguish species, make people die of heat, make people die from extreme storms.  (I am not making any of this up).
  • The earth will soon plunge into a global ice age (wait, that was from 1975, sorry).
  • We will run out of food by the end of the 20th century.
  • We will run out of clean water by the end of the 20th century.
  • Our private health care system is desperately broken, millions go without medical care, and the system is on the verge of collapse.
  • Cell phones will give you brain tumors.
  • Old people will starve and die unless the government takes care of them.
  • Wall Street is greedy and corrupt and the cause of market meltdowns.
  • The banking system is greedy and corrupt and the cause of market meltdowns.
  • If we allow large companies to fail, our economy will be plunged into another Great Depression.
  • Millions of children in the U.S. suffer from malnutrition
  • Obesity is a severe threat to human existence, and is caused by fast food
  • Tax preparers are cheating you

And these are just fresh from the top of my head.  Every single one is a lie.  Yet every single one has been used to keep you — the populace — alarmed.  And in every single case the “solution” is invariably the imposition of additional governmental controls, taxes, subsidies, or restrictions.

The objective of the statists in this country has nothing whatever to do with your safety, health, comfort, or prosperity, except as they may be useful tools to achieve the objectives.  It has everything to do with control.  The statists in the White House and Congress peer out at America from their enclaves, and they see evil.  They see people freely engaging in activities which they themselves would not do.  They see commerce taking place, but not liking the outcomes.  They see businesses willingly offering a product, and individuals willingly parting with their money to buy it.  They see people freely signing mortgage contracts, but declare the terms oppressive.  They see people freely accepting the terms of a situation, but declare that the pay is insufficient – or exorbitant.  They see — evil of all evils — profit!   In other words, they see free people making free decisions and freely engaging in commerce…and it burns deep within them that they have no control over any of it.

The statists’ lust for control is insatiable.  Could there be any better explanation of what has taken place since January 20, 2009?

Today was my birthday.  As you can see, I continue to work tirelessly to increase my carbon footprint.
